Medium. Books & Catalogues
Client. Venice Biennale
Title. Fiona Hall
Collider was engaged by Australia Council for the Arts and curator Linda Michael to create the campaign identity, catalogue and selected collateral for Fiona Hall's participation in the 2015 Venice Biennale.
Hall's presentation Wrong Way Time is an overwhelming collection of artifacts: heads and creatures woven from military camouflage, coarsely graffitied clocks, sculpted bread on atlases, banknotes, carved sardine tins, nests of shredded money, strange driftwood and more. Each object bares its unique implications, carefully displayed in vitrines within the dark exhibition space. The catalogue becomes a faithful extension to Hall's exhibition experience by formally presenting each work on black from front to back cover. The typography system is complementarily simple, the loud nuances of Hall's works uninterrupted by big titles and overt design but instead supported by quiet justified text, generous margins and the subtle eccentricities of Christian Schwartz's grotesk face FF Bau.
Other collateral Collider developed for the exhibition includes a heavy duty tote bag with Hall's iconic clock face arrow, found in its original context on the Wrong Way Time clock (see the catalogue's front cover). We also reinterpreted Hall's brilliant sardine can works to function as a working USB stick and keepsake for the press contingent. The process included 3D modelling and rapid prototyping the form in-house at Collider.
