Medium. Books & Catalogues
Client. Campbelltown Arts Centre
Title. Joan Brassil
We were engaged to conceptualise and design the catalogue to accompany Campbelltown Art Centre's (CAC) Winter exhibition 'Strangers: A Retrospective of Joan Brassil', curating a large number of the late Australian artist's sculptures, poems, paintings and other wall works.
The diverse use of materials through Joan's work called for a similar approach in the catalogue production, combining varied stocks for texts, work plates and her poetry. This mix of coloured and transparent papers allowed for new interactions between her works: poems staggering and repeating like the woven threads of works on following pages.
CAC were fortunate to have access to many of the Brassil family's portraits of Joan, the images featuring prominently through essays, interviews and on the front cover via a carefully tipped-in black & white photograph of Joan with one of her curved acrylic works. Through this, the catalogue became a personal scrapbook of Joan's life, as much as a presentation of her work.
