ADF
3D Billboard

Working with the Australian Defence Force Careers team, we created a high fidelity digital avatar based on one of their surveillance drone pilots. The avatar would be used to create four bespoke animation sequences for a selection of Australia’s largest out of home screens in Melbourne and Sydney.

The 15 second sequences needed to play on a seamless loop and working within the constraints of the available hardware we used a number of 3D methods to help the animation feel highly spatial and immersive in each site.

The two Melbourne screen sites required projection mapping planning to achieve the ‘3D’ billboard effect that placed the animated concept within the architecture of the street.

Detailed photo scans were taken of the drone pilot in her full combat kit as well as her equipment such as helmet, gear belt and drone pouch.

All soldier elements were then completely remodelled for animation and texturing for the photoreal CG sequences. We used custom avatar creation work-flows to alter the character to make a unique version of her for the project.

The forest setting in the story had to be created from scratch to allow us to show the Black Hornet surveillance drone being released on a mission. It also had to reference the Australian bushland setting shown within the main campaign.
